Incentive Grants Available for First-Time Jewish Campers

North Shore youth who have never before attended overnight Jewish summer camp are invited to apply for incentive grants to help defray the cost. Thanks to a partnership between the North Shore Teen Initiative (NSTI) and the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC), grants of $1,800 per youth for the summer of 2010 will be awarded to the first 50 qualified local campers who apply.

These campership incentive grants are not needs-based, and will be available on a first come, first served basis. To be eligible, applicants must self-identify as Jewish, be between 3rd and 12th grade, live within the catchment area of the North Shore (towns served) and must either have never attended overnight Jewish summer camp before, or have attended a Jewish overnight summer camp for less than three weeks. Grant money can be applied toward any one of 17 overnight non-profit Jewish camps in the New England region, or any camp nationally listed by the Foundation for Jewish Camp. For a list of these camps, visit www.jewishcamp.org.

The incentive grants will be paid directly to the camps and will appear as a tuition deduction. Campers can receive this funding in addition to any other scholarships or financial aid for which they may have applied. To qualify, youths must sign up for a minimum of three consecutive weeks of camp. Those who have already registered for summer 2009 are still eligible to receive grants.

More about the Foundation for Jewish Camp:
The Foundation for Jewish Camp, a public foundation, is the only national organization dedicated to nonprofit Jewish residential camps, advancing program and leadership excellence in camps and access to vibrant Jewish experiences for campers. The Foundation helps raise awareness and support for Jewish summer camps, highlighting their successful track record for building powerful Jewish commitment in young Jews, ensuring future Jewish continuity. FJC works with more than 150 camps, 70,000 campers, and 12,000 counselors across North America to further its mission. Learn more at: www.jewishcamp.org.

Why Jewish Camping: Research studies have shown that an overnight Jewish camping experience strengthens Jewish identity and helps youth form a lifelong bond with their cultural and religious heritage. Jewish camp alumni are 50% more likely to join a synagogue, 90% more likely to join a Jewish community center, and twice as likely to donate $100 or more to their local Federation than Jewish adults who never went to a Jewish camp. “Children who experience the 24/7 Jewish environment at camp become adults who value their heritage, support Jewish causes and take on leadership roles in their communities,” said Jerry Silverman, CEO of the Foundation for Jewish Camp.
