L'taken Seminar in Washington, DC
The North Shore Teen Initiative (NSTI) is pleased to be offering an exciting new component of our program this coming February. We are looking to take a group of 9th – 12th grade teens to join high school students from across the country and participate in an interactive four-day kallah (retreat), in Washington, D.C.
The “L'Taken Social Justice Seminar” focuses on Jewish values and social justice. Every year more than 100 congregations from across the country bring their high school students to participate in this exciting event. This unique Washington opportunity enables students to hear from experts both inside and outside the Jewish community. Every L'Taken Seminar covers several different issue areas in a variety of interactive formats. Each seminar includes an opportunity for students to lobby on Capitol Hill, tour the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and participate in Havdalah services at one of the memorials. Students also sample the vibrancy of Georgetown and other exciting areas of Washington, D.C.
Our trip to D.C. is scheduled for February 19 – 22, 2010. Students will miss school on Monday, February 22nd, in order to be able to lobby on Capitol Hill around the topics that they have been studying.
The subsidized cost for this trip is $350 for the 4 days (which includes transportation, food at the hotel, and program fees). Additionally, we ask students to bring money for two meals that we will eat “out” while exploring Georgetown. ($30 should be more than adequate to cover these two meals as the restaurants range from Uno’s to Subway). We do have some scholarship funding available through North Shore Teen Initiative. We want to make this trip a reality for anyone who wants to participate and NSTI is committed to finding a way for any teen.
Because of the plane tickets, planning and preparation that must be done ahead of time, applications and full payment are due on December 19, 2009. Again, because of the advanced reservations that we must make and pay for ahead of time, $200 of that amount will serve as a non-refundable deposit.
We are incredibly excited about this opportunity and hope that your child will join us for this remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Please feel free to call, email or drop by with any thoughts, comments or questions.
